ARKive Review of 2012

1 year, 1,205 new species, 9,154 new films and photos, 20 new education resources and a sparkly new look! 2012 was a busy year for the ARKive team so in the first ARKive newsletter of 2013 we thought we would look back at some of the highlights of the year.

Human Impacts

2012 saw the ARKive website have a makeover making it faster, snazzier, and even easier to find what you want! Why not take a look and let us know what you think!

We doubled our collection of education resources in 2012 to over 40! Our resources have been used to teach over 4.5 million students around the world - that’s equivalent to the entire population of New Zealand!

For the second year running, the osprey demonstrating its amazing fishing skills was our most viewed video! Why not give some love to the least viewed - footage of the zorilla? Who can resist its charms...?

It's that most magnificent of creatures - the tiger! Did you know much like a human fingerprint, no two tigers have the same stripe pattern? Please share our tiger facts, photos and videos to raise awareness about this endangered species.

The 287 blogs we posted last year covered everything from the latest environmental news to the Olympians of the animal kingdom.
But the most popular blog of 2012 was Spiders under Threat.

2012 saw us reach over 23,000 Facebook fans and 8,000 twitter followers and we even won an award for it!  We also launched our first Facebook photo competition. Keep an eye out for more contests - you could see your image on the ARKive homepage

Working with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), IUCN and the IUCN Species Survival Commission to help highlight the plight of the world's invertebrates, we held an Invertebrate Photo Competition. Check out the winners in our competition gallery.

We come across weird and wonderful facts everyday so as part of the new look website we thought we'd share them with you. Did you know that the common snapping turtle is a somewhat flatulent species? Got a cool fact about the natural world? Share it with us on Facebook.

What you can look forward to in 2013

It’s our tenth birthday in 2013 and we plan on celebrating in style. We have lots of exciting activities planned for the year which we’ll be revealing in the coming weeks but to keep you going, here are few treats we’ve got coming up…

Escape with ARKive in 2013

This year, travel the world with ARKive as we expand our coverage of the world’s most fascinating eco-regions and habitats, from the arid landscapes of Barrow Island in Australia to the rocky and sandy shores of the UK. You will also be able to explore the world’s species and habitats anytime, anywhere as we give ourselves a mobile makeover by improving how we look on mobile devices.

Do you have what it takes to be a science superhero?

Launching March 2013, find out if you’ve got what it takes to be a scientist in our new online game. Lab capes at the ready!

Calling all aspiring wildlife photographers!

Fancy seeing your photos on ARKive along with the world’s best wildlife photographers? If you've been busy with your camera already this year then why not enter ARKive's photography challenge to celebrate the New Year?

To enter, simply post your images that illustrate all things wildlife and 'new' to our Facebook page or our Flickr group tagged NewYear. Check out some of the entries we've had already...
