Fancy a trip to a land of wonder and surprise? We certainly do, and that's why we're returning to the Jewels of the UAE. Inspired by a new BBC series called Wild Arabia, we just couldn't resist taking a journey to this fascinating land of contrasts, from the vast desert wilderness to vibrant coral reefs, supporting a cast of fascinating species, each superbly adapted to its particular environment. Travel with us as we meet just a few of the Jewels of the UAE... The stuff of legends, the Arabian oryx, is highly specialised for the harsh desert environment with its bright white coat to reflect the sun’s rays, and splayed hooves providing a large surface area to help it roam the sandy landscape. Who needs unicorns? The turkey-like and largely solitary houbara bustard comes into its own with a sophisticated and flamboyant display. Those are just the kind of moves we'd like to see at the local disco! The dugong is actually more closely related to the elephant than the cow after which it's named, and has a particularly long large intestine to aid digestion. What an unlikely sea siren! As with the other Jewels of the UAE, the Arabian sand gecko fits right into Wild Arabia. Look at it, show off its webbed feet. And it's right to be proud as they give it that all-essential grip on the sand. One of the greatest Jewels of the UAE is the tale of how the Arabian oryx was brought back from extinction. Watch the success story unfold... |
