Four hundred thousand.

That's how many sensitive, social seals could be bludgeoned to death or shot and then skinned before they reach the age of 3 months if the Canadian government has its way.

This outrageous number of lives fails to reflect that this year, for the first time in history, there is no market for the pelts. Russia—which had imported 95 percent of Canadian seal pelts—joined the U.S. and the E.U. in banning seal fur after an international PETA blitz resulted in thousands of letters directed to Vladimir Putin. What it does reflect is the Canadian government's determination to support this massacre out of sheer desperation to control the Parliament swing seats in Newfoundland and Labrador, where the seal slaughter takes place.

We're closer now than ever before to ending this bloody slaughter, but we need your help. Your urgent gift today will help PETA keep heavy pressure on Canada to try to make 2012 the last year that this massacre takes place and will provide much-needed support for our lifesaving efforts for all animals.

Many of the thousands of young seals Canadian sealers hope to kill this year will not even have eaten their first solid meal or learned how to swim before being cruelly slaughtered. Crude spiked clubs called "hakapiks" will be used to crush their soft skulls—often while other seals watch in abject terror. Sealers hook the animals in the eye, cheek, or mouth because their aim is so bad, the seal pups move, or the sealers deliberately try to avoid damaging the animals' body fur.

We are determined to make these horrific images a thing of the past.

Even though the Canadian government may be ramping up its efforts to push seal products into countries such as China, we feel that it cannot continue indefinitely to ignore the growing public outcry against the slaughter—as long as we keep that outcry strong! Help us keep up the fight to end the seal slaughter and help all animals in need by sending a gift today!
