Laura is one lucky chicken. A driver spotted her on an Alabama road used by trucks headed to a nearby slaughterhouse, where she would have been strung up by her legs and killed after a terrible life on a factory farm. Thanks to the driver's quick thinking—and help from PETA—Laura is now in a loving, permanent home where she enjoys the feeling of grass under her feet and the warmth of the sun on her back.

Most chickens will never be as fortunate as Laura. Each year in North America, more than 9 billion individual chickens are slaughtered for chicken salad sandwiches and buckets of wings. During the Super Bowl alone, 1.2 billion chickens' wings are eaten, meaning that 600 million birds are killed. Birds like Laura account for more than 97 percent of all animals bred on, confined to, and killed on factory farms and in slaughterhouses. And because these birds are not protected by any federal law, factory farm workers maim, torment, and slaughter them in the most painful ways.
