Happy World Migratory Bird Day

World Migratory Bird Day 2012, taking place on 12th and 13th May, is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the protection of migratory birds and their habitats.

Every year, migratory birds perform some of the most incredibly arduous journeys on the planet. From the tiny ruby-throated hummingbird’s remarkable non-stop migration across the Gulf of Mexico, to the extreme high-altitude migration of bar-headed geese across the Himalayas, the phenomenon of migration has fascinated and inspired people for centuries, and continues to do so today.

This year, World Migratory Bird Day is celebrating the ongoing relationship between migratory birds and people so we've joined in by picking a few of our favourite migratory bird videos to share with you.

Despite weighing less than 20 grams, the barn swallow routinely covers thousands of miles of unwelcoming terrain each year, including the Sahara Desert.

Bar-headed geese are the world’s highest flying migratory birds, migrating over Mount Everest at 29,000 feet to reach India's lowlands.
